As part of the work Geoff and I are doing with Apache-Test, I wrote some instructions for installing PHP and Apache with my favorite options.

To install PHP as a shared library:

1. $ tar -xvzf apache_1.3.33.tar.gz
2. $ tar -xvzf php-5.0.2.tar.gz
4. $ cd apache_1.3.33
5. $ ./configure \
6.       --prefix=/usr/local/apache \
7.       --enable-module=most \
8.       --enable-shared=max
9. $ make
10. $ sudo make install
12. $ cd ../php-5.0.2
13. $ ./configure \
14.       --prefix=/usr/local/php \
15.       --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs \
16.       --with-gd \
17.       --with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql \
18.       --enable-sockets \
19.       --with-zlib-dir=/usr/include
20. $ make
21. $ sudo make install

To install PHP as a static library:

1. $ tar -xvzf apache_1.3.33.tar.gz
2. $ tar -xvzf php-5.0.2.tar.gz
4. $ cd apache_1.3.33
5. $ ./configure
7. $ cd ../php-5.0.2
8. $ ./configure \
9.       --prefix=/usr/local/php \
10.       --with-apache=../apache_1.3.33 \
11.       --with-gd \
12.       --with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql \
13.       --enable-sockets \
14.       --with-zlib-dir=/usr/include
15. $ make
16. $ sudo make install
18. $ cd ../apache_1.3.33
19. $ ./configure \
20.       --prefix=/usr/local/apache \
21.       --activate-module=src/modules/php5/libphp5.a \
22.       --enable-module=most \
23.       --enable-shared=max
24. $ make
25. $ sudo make install
