I agree:

I think we PHP developers must all do what we can to get other developers as well as hosting services to move on and fully embrace PHP5 before PHP6 comes out. :)

Over the years I've come to the conclusion that most of the stock, pop-psychology questions and other prepared questions are of limited use. As a technical interviewer I'm interested in two main things: the applicants' breadth and depth of knowledge plus how well they will fit into our team. I'm really not qualified to measure anything else, and will leave that to the HR folks (all that "what do you want to be doing in 5 years?", or "what is your greatest weakness?" junk).

To that end, after getting the applicant comfortable with a few "simple" questions about their experience or education, etc., I've found the most useful approach to be something along the lines of getting them to tell me about what they perceive to be their most important job-related accomplishments. The important thing then is to dig down into why they feel it was important, what the challenges were, and how those challenges were overcome. You'll learn so much more about how they work and what they know than you will with, "If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?" >_<
