ZendCon Wrapup

It has been more than two weeks since ZendCon, yet I can't seem to manage to find the time to recap the event. (Work has been keeping me busy.) This will be brief.

Note: My photos from the conference are available on SmugMug with a few select ones on Flickr.

Here are a few tidbits that I can manage to remember:

  • There were about 550 people registered, making ZendCon the largest PHP-only conference.
  • I got to meet a few people like Wolfgang Drews, Aaron Wormus, and Jennifer Goodie.
  • My tutorial, Essential PHP Security, was well-attended and very well-received. (I'll catch up on publishing slides to our talks page soon.)
  • Cal Evans (and some other Zend folks) created a deck of playing cards featuring members of the PHP community. (I'm the Jack of Diamonds.)
  • We handed out a free PHP Quick Guide and sponsored the Expo Happy Hour, which means we paid for everyone to drink free beer and wine. :-)
  • I had a lot of fun with George's fisheye lens.
  • During his talk, Wez likened non-persistent database connections to phone calls, describing how persistent connections let you avoid the "shooting the shit" part.
  • Andrei dressed up as a White Russian for Halloween. Sara dressed up as the Princess of PECL.
  • The conference seemed to be running about 15 minutes behind schedule all week, which lead to the Armorize guy getting abruptly cut off, just as he was getting to the good stuff.

After the conference, a few of us went to see Shane speak at Yahoo about Komodo, which has some really nice debugging features, especially for people who develop heavily in both JavaScript and PHP and need to see what's happening at every step.

On Friday, we went to see Borat, which was extreme in every way. I can't remember laughing so hard for so long.

Saturday night was Andrei's 30th birthday party, featuring the I Love White Russians shirts that I ordered. (George took the picture featured on the shirt, and you can find the original on Flickr.)

It was a good week and a good conference, but now it's time to get back to work.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for mentioning us! Can you please mention at least another line that we're a security company offering static analysis for Web languages? Also, can you also change the link to Armorize from armorize.com to www.armorize.com?

Another thing is, we're offering trail accounts for people to play with the product over the Web. Would you be interested? If so I'd be happy to give you an account--it is a really cool product. Yesterday in our demo we scanned one of the largest blog software consisting of 13 megs of PHP code, took us 17 minutes to complete, and finding 66 serious vulnerabilities--quite fun!

Thank you very much!

Wayne

Hi Wayne,

Sure, I'd love to try it out. I was sorry that your talk at ZendCon got cut off, because it's an interesting topic, and it seemed like you were just getting to the good stuff.

Let me know the next time you're giving an online demo or something. I'm sure some of my readers would be interested.

Hi Chris,

Thanks! I just gave a Webinar for New York PHP:

http://www.nyphp.org/content/calend...p;date=20061116

I should have let you know. The next big talk for me would be at the RSA conference:

https://2007.rsaconference.com/US/

It's on DEV-203 -- Session "Developing with Security" on Feb 7th at 10:40am, and this time a full 70 minute session so I'll have enough time :)

Will you be going to the con? The talks this year is quite good.

We'll do another Webinar soon. I'll let you know as soon as we fix the date.

Thanks for taking an interest in CodeSecure. We'll email you a trial account on Monday then!

We are planning another on-line presentation quite soon as our last one was quite successful and all the participants responded very well to what we had to say.

We will keep you posted as to the time and date.

Thanks.
